Guardianship Volume Debuts
With this update we officially debut out new Guardianship volume. We are adding it to the Office Practice and Estate Planning libraries at no additional cost. So, if you subscribe to one of these libraries, look for this new volume after you install this update.

This volume contains three groups of forms: 1) relating to a guardianship of the person of a minor as established in Family Court, 2) relating to a guardianship of the person and/or property of a minor as established in Surrogate’s Court, and 3) local forms for Bronx and New York Counties relating to a guardianship of an incapacitated person as established in a Supreme Court proceeding.

The 82 automated forms in this volume include all of the New York Official Court Guardianship forms. Our automated functions perform all calculations on the guardianship accounts, eliminating manual math errors. The volume also contains 310 statutory and analytical links to Westlaw, enabling you to quickly research as you generate case documents.

This shipment includes a roll-up of all WebUpdates since the last CD update, as well as new revisions. The changes included in this shipment include:

  1. Westlaw Hyperlinks added – We completed the addition of statutory and analytical links from Westlaw Forms to Westlaw by finishing this task in the Attorney-Client Matters, Landlord and Tenant, Probate, Real Estate, and Wills volume. The New York Westlaw Forms volumes now contain more than 9,700 statutory and analytical links to Westlaw.
  2. Family Law – We added all of the remaining Family court forms on the New York Unified Court System site: 65 Adoption forms, 17 Paternity forms, 17 Termination of Parental Rights forms, and 12 other Family Court forms. We also added 19 new county forms. Additionally, we updated 75 OCA (Office of Court Administration) forms to match revisions to these official forms. And, we updated four Broome County forms. Finally, we added two important new OCA forms, Personal Information Form (Child Support or Paternity) (OCA 4-5 - 5-1d), form 11-131, and Request for Judicial Intervention (OCA), form 2-410.
  3. Lipman’s Wills & Trusts – We added language in several irrevocable trusts when the trust has an SNT beneficiary.
  4. Probate – We added to this volume 16 new OCA forms and 10 Queens County forms. The new OCA forms included eight wrongful death forms, four checklists, and four forms concerning successor letters testamentary.
  5. Business Transactions Solutions - We completely re-organized this volume. The form selector numbers and links to Westlaw were changed to match the updated source material. We also removed two forms which were no longer available.

Customer Questions from the Last WebNotes
The following questions were from Westlaw Forms customers in response to last month's Westlaw Forms WebNotes.

Q: We would like to create a database with all of the addresses in our client list. We will be moving soon. Any suggestions? We have all of the Microsoft programs and WordPerfect.
A: Read about how to export client data from Westlaw Forms to create client lists >>

Q: Are the updates to Westlaw Forms still being sent via a CD?
A: Read about the difference between WebUpdates and CD update >>

Q: Staff members advise that the HUD-1 form in Westlaw Forms is not user friendly. It appears that you can go through the motions to fill out the form, however, you are not able to save it in a format in which you can go back to make changes and have it recalculate. The form is saved in a .pdf format. When changes have to be made, they have to re-enter ALL of the information again. Are they not using the program properly or is this correct? If this is correct, can Westlaw Forms fix this issue?
A: Read about how to view all the decimal places in HUD-1 fields >>

Q: I saw that Westlaw Forms is available in 64-bit, but it’s installed on my server and running in 32-bit mode. How do we get the 64-bit version? When we install it, will it automatically uninstall the 32-bit version and install?
A: Read about Westlaw Forms running in a 64-bit environment >>

Legal Humor

Overheard in the courtroom:

By Defendant: Judge, I want you to appoint me another lawyer.

By the Court: And why is that?

Defendant: Because the Public Defender isn't interested in my case.

The Court (addressing the public defender): Do you have any comments on the defendant's motion?

By the Public Defender: I'm sorry, Your Honor. I wasn't listening.
